Audition Requirements:

• Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script.

• Auditionees must be 20+ to audition.

• Headshot and resume are appreciated.

The production team encourages actors of all races, ethnicities, identities, abilities, experience levels, etc. to audition -- all are welcome!

Performers must show proof of Covid-vaccination status at the first rehearsal.

Note from the director:

These characters are real, strong Southern women. I’m looking for performers who can embody these roles & not make them carbon copies of the movie or caricatures.

No roles have been pre-cast.

​Synopsis: The action is set in Truvy’s beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle (who is not sure whether or not she is still married), the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town’s rich curmudgeon, Ouiser, ("I’m not crazy, I’ve just been in a bad mood for forty years"); an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee, who has a raging sweet tooth; and the local social leader, M’Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby (the prettiest girl in town), is about to marry a “good ole boy.” Filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic but humorously revealing verbal collisions, the play moves toward tragedy when, in the second act, the spunky Shelby (who is a diabetic) risks pregnancy and forfeits her life. The sudden realization of their mortality affects the others, but also draws on the underlying strength—and love—which give the play, and its characters, the special quality to make them truly touching, funny and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad.

Character Descriptions:

Truvy Jones - stage age 40 to 50 - Owner of the beauty shop. She knows everyone’s business and shares it with anyone who will listen. She always has advice. Vivacious.

​

M’Lynn Eatenton - stage age 50-55 - Shelby’s mother. She is overprotective and finds the need to have a firm grasp on things at all times. She is a busy woman who worries about her daughter.

​

Annelle Dupuy-Desoto - stage age 20-25 - Very shy hair-dresser & assistant to Truvy. She goes from a very soft spoken and timid person at the beginning of the show to a bible loving Christian.

​

Shelby Eatenton-Latcherie - stage age 20 - 30 - Daughter of M’Lynn. Prettiest girl in town. Loved by all. Strong-willed. She has a bit of sass to her. Confident in her own life decisions, in spite of her mother’s protests.

Clairee Belcher - stage age 60+ - Widow of the mayor of Chinquapin. She is wealthy and knows everyone’s business. She loves to laugh and poke fun at the little things that others cry over. She is very close with Ouiser.

Ouiser Boudreaux- stage age 60+ - She is a wealthy old bitty and a loveable, miserable lady. Her unique personality and sense of humor and personality provides comedic relief in the show. Quick-witted.

Rehearsal times: Rehearsals will begin the first week of July. Please bring conflicts to the audition.
